The Juventus man converted a spot kick during the second half to make the scoreline 1-1 and ensure that the match was sent to extra time, though later missed in-front of goal during the ensuing penalty shootout.

“At the beginning of this adventure we told ourselves that we would leave with our heads held high should we lose, and so it is,” Bonucci told Rai Sport.

“We held our own against the champions of the world and that makes us proud.

“Everyone of us has been great.

“I want to applaud all those who have worked with us in this two year period, I am only sorry for the penalties.

Concluding, Bonucci then thanked fans for their continued support.

“I thank all of the Italians because they were present for us,” he said.

“They gave us enthusiasm. We hope to have made them proud of this team.”
