Roma signing Gerson believes the Serie A side were the best choice out of several options for a transfer away from Fluminense.

The 19-year-old signed for the Giallorossi in a deal worth €16.6 million and chose to move to Italy and I Lupi over other European giants, such as Barcelona.

“I chose Roma because it is a great club and I thought it was the best choice,” Gerson told the press.

He played for Fluminense for two years after being promoted from their youth academy in 2014 and appeared 31 times overall, scoring one goal and assisting four others, and Roma coach Luciano Spalletti will have to choose from several roles which Gerson is capable of playing.

“I like to play, get the ball, make assists and provide decisive passes to my teammates, but I also like to go and shoot,” the Brazilian added.

Gerson has not yet been called up for his national side’s senior squad, however he was named in Brazil’s Under-20 side in 2015 and appeared in all matches of the South American Youth Football Championship, in which Brazil finished fourth place.

He follows in the footsteps of greats such as Falcao in being one of many Brazilians to play for Roma.

“There’s a great tradition of Brazilian players [at Roma] and I would love to be remembered like so many others in the past,” Gerson said.
