conteItalian national team coach Antonio Conte feels let down by Italy’s European Championship exit at the hands of Germany, though remains proud of his players’ performances throughout the tournament.

Having played 90 minutes and extra time locked at 1-1 with the Germans, the Azzurri were forced to settle the tie on penalty shootouts, only for nerves to kick in as they eventually lost 7-6.

“The boys have shown so much love for this shirt, giving absolutely everything they had,” Conte told Rai Sport, following the loss.

“I’m really proud of them and I’m happy to have had this experience.”

Conte is now set to leave his role with the Azzurri and take over at English Premier League side Chelsea, with the Italian admitting that his departure is a definitive farewell.

“There is a lot of disappointment for this elimination,” he continued.

“I just feel really sorry for the boys, but this is certainly a goodbye.”
