stadio san paoloThe mayor of Naples, Luigi De Magistris, has announced that plans are in place to restructure the Stadio San Paolo, with €25 million reserved.

The stadium currently holds just over 60,000 people and there had been discussions to renovate it earlier this summer, however nothing major has happened since then.

“Relations with [Napoli president Aurelio] De Laurentiis are good, sometimes there are difference but we have a good relationship,” De Magistris told RTL 102.5.

“We are working towards a serious restructuring of the stadium, we have put in some significant resources thanks to Credito Sportivo worth €25 million, and procedures for the work have already begun.”

Despite these preparations, however, the club themselves are yet to provide a helping hand.

“This is all our money, we are still waiting for some resources to be put forward by the company, but we hope this will happen some time in the near future,” said De Magistris.

The stadium has been renovated twice since opening in 1959, once in preparation for the 1990 World Cup and again six years ago.
