AC Milan youngster Gianluigi Donnarumma should stay at the club and become a legend there, according to Inter icon Giuseppe Bergomi.

He has urged the talented teenager to follow a similar career path to himself, having came through the Nerazzurri’s youth system before going on to become one of their all-time greats.

Given the standoff at the Rossoneri at present over a takeover and potential new contract for the goalkeeper, Bergomi is hopeful that the situation can be resolved and that he can become a mainstay at Milan.

“A guy like him who has blazed through all of the youth levels, it is only natural that he is receiving international recognition,” Bergomi told Sky Sport 24. “He exudes confidence.

“The feeling you get from him is that he is so calm and doesn’t feel pressure. He is the natural replacement for [Gianluigi] Buffon. I have been aware of Gigio since he was very young and I’ve always been very potential.

“He is going to become one of football’s greats. I hope and think that he should stay at Milan and become a bandiera. He must stay there and make history.”

Bergomi also believes that one man deserves special credit for the rise of Donnarumma, who he also claimed people shouldn’t be too down on should he make mistakes.

“I think that the credit for Donnarumma breaking through must go to [former Milan coach Sinisa] Mihajlovic,” he added. “He was the one who took a chance and gave him a debut in Serie A despite being so young.

“Mistakes are always going to be there for a player who is that age but he doesn’t make many. I think he has a massive future.”
