Former AC Milan midfielder Kaka has confirmed his retirement as a professional footballer, with a view to becoming a director.

The Brazilian has been without a club since leaving MLS side Orlando City in October, and had been linked with a return to his first club Sao Paulo, as well as taking on a boardroom role at Milan.

However, speaking at a special event in Sao Paulo’s Estadio Morumbi hosted by Globo Esporte, Kaka confirmed his decision to hang up his boots.

“I needed some time to think and make a decision about my professional life,” the former Real Madrid star claimed. “I asked five very close people in my life; my parents, my brother, my girlfriend and my brother’s wife, as well as taking some time for prayer.

“I also received some proposals from clubs and went to Europe to watch some football there, where you can feel the full excitement and potential of the game. However, I came to the conclusion that it was time for me to end my career as a professional player.”

The 35-year-old lifted the Scudetto and the Champions League with Milan, as well as winning the Ballon D’Or whilst at the club, and hinted he could return to the Rossoneri as a director.

“Now I will prepare to continue in football but in a different role. I would like to be a figure who stands between the players and the club.

“Just because I was a good player, it does not automatically mean I will become a good director, so I want to take the time to study this role, especially at one of my former clubs. Milan recently proposed this to me and it is something I will consider.”

Kaka scored 104 goals in 307 appearances for the Diavolo across two spells, and enjoyed a trophy-laden career with the club. This was in addition to earning 92 caps for Brazil and lifting the 2002 World Cup.
