Following his side’s 2-2 draw with Benevento, AC Milan captain Leonardo Bonucci is adamant the Rossoneri will improve, but feels there is lots of work yet to be done.

Benevento made history against Milan, with goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli bagging a 95th minute equaliser to earn Serie A’s bottom club their first ever point in the top flight, this following a run of 14 defeats.

“I think many people will say they haven’t seen an end to a game like that in their lives,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

“I want to Congratulate Brignoli on scoring a great goal, but I am also apologetic as we wanted, and believed, we we could start this journey under a new coach in another way.

“This week we worked hard, both physically and tactically.

“We are still missing something, the team wants to get past this moment. As always, there is work to do regardless of the outcome, which won’t change because of this game.

“We have to think about what is going on on the field, and try to improve every aspect. There have been dubious refereeing decisions, but we have to look at what we are doing on the pitch in terms of the level of play, aggression and organisation.”

After Gattuso took over from Vincenzo Montella, Bonucci was quick to praise the character of his new coach.

“I think he [Gattuso] has so much charisma, character and the experience to convey this to the team in the right way to reverse the trend,” Bonucci said.

“Today was a bad result, we have to come together and look ahead in a positive manner, as things can’t get any worse.

“We have to look forward with our heads held high and with a positive attitude, plus the desire to improve things.

“It feels like a defeat as what counted today were the three points. To concede a goal like this horrible, but we got a point and will start again.”
