Today, Juventus and Italy goalkeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon celebrates turning 40 years old.
In order to commemorate the occasion, we have decided to delve deeper into the decorated icon and uncover 40 things you may not have known about the Carrara native.
5) Things could have been different
He started his career as a midfielder but moved between the posts at the age of 12 due to injuries to both of his team’s goalkeepers at that time.
6) An incredible World Cup record
During the 2006 World Cup, he conceded just two goals in the entire tournament en route to Italy becoming champions: an own goal to Cristian Zaccardo and a Zinedine Zidane penalty.
7) Saving from the best
There is only one player who Buffon has saved more than one penalty from in his career. Twice, the Azzurri legend has denied the iconic former Inter ace Ronaldo from the spot.
8) The one that continues to elude him
To date, he has endured consistent heartbreak in the Champions League. Three times Buffon has been a finalist in the competition but has been beaten by AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid on each occasion.
