A cold, windy afternoon in Florence saw Fiorentina overcome Chievo 1-0 to claim a vital three points.

La Viola put a poor run of seven matches without a win behind them as Cristiano Biraghi blasted home early on at the Stadio Artemis Franchi.

Meanwhile, Chievo continue to struggle on the road with their last away win coming in September against Cagliari, drawing two and losing seven since.

As a result, Fiorentina stay in 10th position in the Serie A standings, while Chievo remain five points above the relegation zone.

Chievo got a taste of things to come as Biraghi blasted an effort which was well saved by Stefano Sorrentino inside the opening minute.

Then the Fiorentina left-back tried again and this time his rocket of a shot flew straight into the far top corner.

Diego Falcinelli was next up to try his luck, but could only blast over the crossbar from just inside the 18-yard box.

Chances were few and far between for both teams, though Fiorentina went close through a Jordan Veretout shot, and a Davide Astori header.

After the break, Fiorentina had the ball in the back of the net through Marco Benassi but it was ruled out by Rosario Abisso for offside.

Chievo slowly made their way into the game and a low drive from Ivan Radovanovic needed a good save from Sportiello to push it out for a corner.

At the other end, Falcinelli was in on goal but sliced his effort high and wide, before Sportiello was called into action from a Lucas Castro header.

A wonderful ball over the Chievo defence found its way to Giovanni Simeone, but his header on goal was blocked by Sorrentino.

There were halfhearted claims for a Chievo penalty as a Dario Dainelli header looked to have touched the arm of Benussi, but the referee waved play on.

Sorrentino was in action again, this time producing a diving save to deny Veretout, before a brilliant block by Dainelli on Gil Dias.
