Cagliari defender Gregory van der Wiel has ended his six month Italian adventure to sign for Toronto F.C. in what could be the last move in the Italian transfer window.

The Dutchman, who had previously had spells with Ajax, Paris Saint-Germain and Fenerbahce, played just five Serie A matches for the Sardinian side and once in the Coppa Italia.

Cagliari released a statement on their official website announcing the departure of the 29 year-old, who will link up with MLS trailblazer Sebastian Giovinco.

Van der Wiel has accumulated his fair share of silverware in the past, including four Ligue 1 championships and three Eredivisie titles.

The presence of Paolo Farago on the right flank has kept van der Wiel restricted to the bench for much of the season.
