Antonio Caracciolo bagged the only goal of the game as Hellas Verona beat rivals Chievo 1-0 in the 10th Serie A Derby della Scala at the Stadio Bentegodi.

In a game which struggled to come to life, with neither able to fashion good chances, Caracciolo did fire across goal past Stefano Sorrentino early in the second half.

Both sides have struggled this season, but the victory gives the Mastini two consecutive wins for the first time since April 2015, with Chievo failing to keep a clean sheet in any of the last 11 games.

As a result, Chievo are now perilously close to the relegation zone, three points above Hellas, who now sit 18th in the Serie A table.

A tight opening to the match saw Verona get the first shot on target though Marcel Buchel, but Sorrentino managed to punch out for a corner.

Chances were few and far between for both. Ryder Matos had an effort blocked, while at the other end Robeto Inglese brought down a long ball but half-volleyed over the crossbar from 18 yards.

Chievo seemed quite happy to play on the counter and had a flurry of chances, first through Mattia Bani’s whose header was off-target, then Lucas Castro had a shot saved by Nicolas.

Then as the first half came to an end, Inglese found himself through on goal, following a mistake at the back by Verona, but Nicolas saved with his legs.

After the break, Verona got an immediate breakthrough as Antonio Caracciolo, who got on the end of a low Daniele Verde cross and fired into the far right corner.

Both Valter Birsa and Ivan Radovanovic had strikes on goal as Chievo went looking for an equaliser, but neither could hit the target.

Try as they might Chievo were unable to get past a resolute Verona backline, with Inglese and Sergio Pellissier well marshalled at the back by Caracciolo and Jagos Vukovic.
