In one of the worst kept secrets of the transfer market, Stefan De Vrij has announced that he has joined Inter from Lazio on a free transfer.

The defender had been widely expected to join the Nerazzurri after terms were agreed on a deal midway through the campaign, with the Dutchman making it clear that he would not renew his contract at the Stadio Olimpico.

Now on international duty, De Vrij has confirmed the move in an interview with Aggemen Dagblad, while he also wanted to renounce suggestions that he shouldn’t have played in the final game of the season, when he gave away a penalty as Lazio were beaten 3-2 by his new club in a game that brought Champions League football back to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

“I’ve signed for Inter for five years and I think that I can improve even further in the Nerazzurri shirt so I can’t wait to get started,” said De Vrij.

“Everyone who knows me knows that I gave everything in that Lazio-Inter game, as I always do. I don’t know if they believe that in Italy though so I turned everything off for a week and focused only on the national team.”

The move has yet to be officially announced by Inter.
