With Lazio squandering the final Champions League qualifying spot in Serie A with a late final day defeat to Inter, Roma took the opportunity to mock their city rivals with a large dose of revenge.

The Biancoceleste went into the final round occupying fourth place, and only needed a draw at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday to secure a place in the Champions League at the expense of their opponents.

Leading 2-1 with less than a quarter of an hour remaining, the Aquile saw Senad Lulic sent off and conceded twice to lose and drop into the Europa League.

Some 270 miles north at Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium, Roma fans unfurled a banner with “Oh Nooo” emblazoned across, in reference to a similar message displayed by Lazio supporters eight years ago.

With Roma neck-and-neck with Inter in the race for the Scudetto in May 2010, Lazio supporters brandished the sarcastic banner in a league clash against the latter, as they urged their side to allow Inter to win and dash Roma’s title hopes.

The Nerazzurri duly recorded a 2-0 victory and went on to complete a treble that season, but Roma fans have not forgotten the incident and were keen to mock their rivals with a taste of their own medicine as news filtered through on Sunday.

Roma will return to the Champions League themselves next season, after a 1-0 victory over Sassuolo secured third place in Serie A.
