With Liverpool in their first Champions League final since defeat to AC Milan in 2007, defender Virgil van Dijk doesn’t think they need any more motivation than that.

It is 13 years since that magnificent Liverpool comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul, will it give you motivation going into the game on Saturday?

“We don’t need extra motivation, everyone is ready and they are looking forward it, it is a fantastic game to play. There aren’t many players in their career who get to play these kind of games. We are here now and want to give everything we have and get the right result.

Since joining the club it seems like you have taken a leadership role, have you been vocal off the pitch with your teammates?

“Outside of the pitch I like to relax, as that is who I am. But when the game starts and want to help the team do as well as possible and win the game. Due to my position on the field, I need to be vocal and need to organise which is just me.

You have had a massive impact on Liverpool, but what impact has Liverpool had on you?

“A massive impact, from day one the manager and staff have made me so welcome, which helps to settle in, as have the results. Liverpool are my team and Anfield is my home. I love playing for this club, and I think Liverpool as a club deserves to be in the Champions League year in, year out, and hopefully that will continue to happen.

This is the biggest game in your career, and what does it feel like to be sharing the dressing room with two other Dutchman?

“It is very special for the whole squad, and everyone is looking forward to it, and we just need to enjoy it and hopefully in the end we can enjoy it a bit more.
