Having twice failed to sign him previously, Chelsea are set to line up another assault on Napoli’s Dries Mertens, in the event that Maurizio Sarri takes over in London.

Antonio Conte has attempted in two previous transfer windows to convince the Belgian to swap the Stadio San Paolo for Stamford Bridge, but to no avail.

However, the Blues are undeterred by that and according to the Daily Telegraph, if the club do appoint Sarri as they are soon expected to, he will make a point of attempting a reunion with Mertens.

The Belgian was top scorer for Sarri last season at the Partenopei as they went down to the wire with Juventus in their bid to end a long wait for Scudetto success.

If Sarri does take over in London and he and Chelsea are to make a serious assault on the Belgium ace, who is fresh off the back of a World Cup wonder goal with a fantastic volley for the Red Devils against Panama, they may regret their timing.

Mertens did have a €28 million release clause in his Napoli contract, although that stipulation in his contract expired on June 15, meaning any team will now have to enter into negotiations with Aurelio De Laurentiis and co. for the striker.
