The speculation linking Mauro Icardi with a surprise move to Juventus has been laughed off by Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta, who claimed there is no basis to it.

Following the end of the Serie A season, there were continued rumours of the Old Lady’s interest in the Inter captain, with some even suggesting that they could possibly swap him for Gonzalo Higuain.

However, Marotta discussed the transfer stories linking Icardi to Turin, as well as the Argentine’s former teammate in Milan last season, Valencia loanee Joao Cancelo.

“Icardi has been a suggestion and of course we are talking about an excellent player but he is at Inter. News reports have said that we approached him but it all part of fantasy. It is fantasy football,” he said at the book launch of The End of Italian Football.

“There is strong interest in Cancelo. He is an excellent player and fits the profile of the kind of guy we are looking for, although there are currently no negotiations.”

Providing further transfer updates on men who are a little closer to the Bianconeri, he discussed their long-running move for Liverpool’s Emre Can and the future of the aforementioned Higuain.

“At Juventus, we always consider our players to be unsellable, until the moment that they ask to be sold. Higuain hasn’t asked to leave and we haven’t received any offers for him,” he added.

“We are optimistic on Can. We have had contact with his representatives, discussions have already started and they are at a good point. We hope things will be wrapped up in 10 days.”
