AC Milan could be set for another ownership change with the Ricketts family, who own MLB franchise the Chicago Cubs, confirming their interest in the club.

On Friday, current president Li Yonghong missed the payment deadline of 5pm to submit his €32 million capital increase and the club could be set to fall into the hands of the Elliott hedge fund as a result, after they expressed interest in doing so.

However, Tom Ricketts and his family, who ended the Chicago Cubs 108-year drought for a championship in 2016 after they took over at Wrigley Field in 20009, have confirmed via a press release that they would be willing to take over at the Diavolo.

“The Ricketts family, not just Tom, are interested in acquiring Milan’s majority shares. Tom may be the central figure but but the whole family and all of our resources are involved,” read a statement.

“The family brought a title to the Chicago Cubs after long term investments and the whole family are involved in this just like the ownership of the Cubs, which centred on the team’s project, surroundings, fans and the city of Chicago.

“An approach at AC Milan would involve no quick changes but long term investments to ensure lasting success.”

Tom Ricketts is reported by Forbes magazine to have a net worth of close to €2.2 billion.
