Arsenal have agreed a fee of €30 million with Sampdoria to sign midfielder Lucas Torreira, who is set to move to London on a five-year deal.

The 22-year-old is coming off the back of an exceptional season with the Blucerchiati, in which he caught the eye of many clubs within Italy and across the continent and also earned him a place in Uruguay’s World Cup squad.

Although he had a release clause in his contract of €20, it reported that the Gunners paid an extra €5m in order to beat out competition from Borussia Dortmund and Napoli, who are also looking to strengthen their midfield this summer.

Personal terms have already been discussed after a meeting between the player’s agent and Sampdoria on Tuesday afternoon and Arsenal have offered Torreira a five-year contract.

The midfielder, who moved to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in 2016, is expected to put pen to paper on that deal and make the move to the Premier League.

Last season, the combative Uruguayan started all but two of Sampdoria’s 38 Serie A fixtures, scoring four goals and contributing one assist over the course of the campaign.
