Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of former Italy international goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, following his departure from Juventus at the end of his contract.

The 40-year-old ended a 17-year stint with the Bianconeri last month, after announcing in May his intention to move on at the end of his deal.

French champions PSG were immediately paired with Buffon and on Friday officially confirmed the arrival of their key transfer target.

“We are very happy to announce the signing of Gianluigi Buffon, who today signed a one-year contract plus the option of an additional year,” a statement on PSG’s official website read.

Meanwhile, the former Parma shot-stopper revealed what convinced him to make the switch to the Parc des Princes.

“It is with great happiness that I join PSG,” Buffon told the same website. “For the first time in my career, I leave Italy and only an ambitious project such as this could bring me to this decision.

“I thank the club and the president [Nasser Al-Khelaifi] for their trust. Having followed the incredible progress made over the past few years, I know the ambitions of PSG and will bring all my energy, experience and thirst for victory to help my new club achieve the great goals it has set itself.

“Together with my new teammates and fans, we will share some fantastic emotions at the Parc des Princes and in all the stadiums where we will be representing Paris, this marvellous city that deserves to one day see it’s team at the top of world football.”

Buffon joins PSG after 656 appearances for Juventus and nine Serie A titles, as well as four Coppa Italia triumphs.
