Despite spending last season on loan at La Liga side Villarreal, former AC Milan striker Carlos Bacca has claimed that Rossoneri coach Gennaro Gattuso wanted to retain his services for the upcoming campaign.

The Colombian international arrived from Sevilla in 2015, but was allowed to return to Spain after failing to convince former Milan coach Vincenzo Montella that he was worthy of a first-team place and now joined the Yellow Submarine permanently.

“Since the preparation for the World Cup, I had the desire to come back [to Milan] and it was my home,” Bacca told the press.

“The desire of my family was coming back here to this club [Villarreal] where I have found my level again, also my children told me that they would stay in Spain even if I had continued in Italy as a Milan player.”

The 31-year-old reiterated that incoming sporting director Leonardo also supported keeping him on the peninsula and, despite leaving, hoped the new regime at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza will find success.

“I could have stayed at Milan, I had the chance” stated Bacca. “Gattuso and Leonardo wanted me to stay.

“The coach himself told me he would work with me, and considered me a first-team player and did not want me not to leave. It made me feel important, but the decision to say farewell was already taken.

“Milan are doing the right things, though and have a coach who will speak directly to your face and will come back to win big things.”
