Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez put Frosinone to the sword as Atalanta got their Serie A campaign underway with a 4-0 win on Monday, with the No.10 bagging two goals and two assists.

In the absence of Josip Ilicic, Gomez took full responsibility in attack and put in a stellar performance, leading coach Gian Piero Gasperini to heap praise on his captain.

“Yes, you could say that,” Gasperini responded when asked if Gomez was La Dea’s equivalent of the Portuguese.

“This year he has prepared very well, he’s come with good motivation and is doing amazing things.

“Last season he was less prolific in goalscoring positions but he still had a great year.”

Atalanta face a tricky Europa League playoff first-leg on Thursday, with Copenhagen visiting the Bergamaschi’s European home, the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, and the coach is aware that it will not be easy.

“There are a lot of commitments and we’re still missing the most important thing, which is reaching the Europa League group stage,” he said.

“We’re facing a team which finds itself in the Europa League but has always previously competed in the Champions League.

“We’re motivated, but we know it’s not easy.”
