Racing director Diego Milito admitted that the Argentinian club did everything they could to retain forward Lautaro Martinez as long as possible, before he ultimately joined Inter.

The former Nerazzurri striker returned to his boyhood club after a hugely successful stint in Serie A, and is now involved behind the scenes at the Avellaneda-based club.

Having starred in the Copa Libertadores and Argentine Primera Division, Lautaro completed a switch to Inter this summer, but Milito revealed how hard Racing pushed to retain him.

“It was very difficult, we tried until the last moment to hold on to him,” ex-Argentina international Milito told La Nacion in his homeland.

“It is natural that the buying club wants a player like Martinez, who has arrived to be a star. I won’t say how much he was sold for, there are times during the transfer period where it is better not to say. Soon it will be announced.”

Martinez scored 27 goals in 60 appearances for Racing before sealing a move to Serie A. The 21-year-old made his debut for Inter in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Sassuolo.
