Inter’s second-half collapse against Torino on Sunday evening was down to a mental collapse and fear on the part of the players, according to Biscione legend Marco Tardelli.

Luciano Spalletti’s side had a comfortable two-goal lead built up from the opening 45 minutes and looked confident, but a complete capitulation after the break allowed Toro to mount a comeback and leave with a point when they should have been killed off.

“Inter’s first-half was perfect but something happened in the second,” Tardelli said.

“There was a physical and mental decline.

“In the second half the team was afraid, they came back out from the dressing room convinced that the game was already won. You cannot have these collapses.”

Tardelli continued to say that Spalletti has a job on his hands to change his players’ mentality and that it is clear why the club were keen to sign Luka Modric this summer.

“Spalletti will have to work on the players’ heads,” he said.

“He put the team on the field but they were missing something in midfield.

“It is not just by chance that they wanted Modric.”
