Lega Serie A’s new regulations preventing players from wearing personalised captain’s armbands has been met with much backlash and Fiorentina full-back Cristiano Biraghi has spoken out in support of his captain German Pezzella.

Pezzella wore an armband with Davide Astori’s initials and number, honouring La Viola’s former captain who tragically passed away ahead of a Serie A fixture in Udine earlier this year, while Roma’s Daniele De Rossi and Alejandro Gomez of Atalanta also continue to wear their own designs this season.

“Nobody can touch the Fiorentina armband dedicated to Astori,” he said, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“If Serie A fine us, then we will pay it.”

Biraghi was linked with a summer switch to AC Milan, but the Italian says he turned down the chance to move to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza after speaking with Viola coach Stefano Pioli.

“I heard about the interest and spoke with Pioli to tell him I felt fine in Florence,” he added.

“He told me that the club were starting a new cycle and there were objectives for the next few years, so I asked not to be sold.”
