Former AC Milan right-back Cafu has urged the club to continue their rebuilding process and warned that the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain was no guarantee of success.

The Rossoneri underwent a restructure over the summer as Leonardo and Paolo Maldini arrived as directors, and deals were negotiated for Mattia Caldara, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Samu Castillejo to strengthen the squad.

However, Cafu insisted despite the arrival of Argentina striker Higuain, who joined on an initial season-long loan from Juventus, a change in mentality was needed if the Rossoneri were to return to the Champions League.

“Milan must grow, the squad must think itself worthy of challenging for the top spots and qualifying for the Champions League,” the former Brazil captain told Tiki Taka.

“Higuain alone is not enough, you need a compact team that fights for a single goal.”

The two-time World Cup winner joined Milan from Serie A rivals Roma in 2003 and went on to lift the Scudetto and the Champions League.
