In attempting to defend teammate Cristiano Ronaldo from criticism following his red card in Valencia, Juventus midfielder Emre Can has courted controversy himself with his comments.

The Portuguese star’s return to Spanish shores for the first time since leaving Real Madrid in the summer was an unhappy one as he was dismissed in the first half for an off the ball incident.

With the straight red card seemingly stemming from pulling the hair of ex-Inter defender Jeison Murillo, Can had a response which has since been criticised for being sexist in nature as he defended Ronaldo’s red card.

“Is that supposed to be a red card? I learned that the reason for it is being attributed to the hair pull but we are not women. We play football,” he told DAZN.

“If you are going to give a red card for that then you will have to do it for practically every foul. That is 100 percent not a red card.”

In spite of the red card for Ronaldo, Juventus still managed to overcome a potentially difficult away trip by beating Valencia 2-0 thanks to a Miralem Pjanic brace.
