After he watched his side surrender a lead for the third game from five this season, Gennaro Gattuso believes AC Milan are being punished for every error they make this season.

The Rossoneri previously lost 3-2 at Napoli despite leading 2-0 in the second half and last weekend, twice hit the front at home to Atalanta and were twice pegged back.

That trend continued away to Empoli for a third consecutive draw, having also shared the spoils with Cagliari, leading to Gattuso fielding questions on whether it is a defensive issue that is the problem for his side.

“When you create six or seven chances in a game and don’t score, then it is clear that we are paying a high price for everything,” the Milan coach told reporters.

“There was another mistake today, this one from [Alessio] Romagnoli but the problem is not individual errors. Whatever happens, we are paying dearly for it so we must find a way to limit the damage.”

Gattuso, who remains no closer to knowing the fitness situation of Gonzalo Higuain until he undergoes further tests on Friday, did acknowledge that it is perhaps a mental issue when lamenting his side’s many missed chances in Tuscany, up against the inspired Pietro Terracciano.

“When you aren’t scoring goals, then you need to create a lot of chances and I have to say that on this occasion, the Empoli goalkeeper was very good,” he added.

“We made a mistake and paid dearly for it, as I said. We tried to score but didn’t succeed despite our chances. The game can turn on that even if we need to close them out better.

“When you find [Hakan] Calhanoglu in the area but don’t make the most of it, it seems the problem may be mental. Our position in the table also doesn’t help us feel any more calm about things.”
