Sixteen months into his role as Roma’s sporting director, Monchi is certain the position is right for him and is pleased with his progress thus far.

Despite facing an abundance of criticism for selling a number of high profile Giallorossi players, the 49-year-old stood firm with his long-term plan for the club.

“We are working towards economic sustainability which all allows us to decide who to sell and when to sell,” he told Sports Illustrated.

“We are on track but it does not mean we will not sell in the future because selling is not bad. [Selling] is normal if you invest in structures, coaches and players that make the club grow.”

While Radja Nainggolan, Alisson Becker and Kevin Strootman left the capital during the summer transfer window, the club’s incoming player list has left many fans underwhelmed, however Monchi showed faith in his scouting network.

“You need to find the players who are right for your system,” he said.

“We have an excellent scouting structure, an excellent strategy and, in general, an excellent source of information [to utilise].”

Monchi also revealed his two major goals at Roma: “My biggest goal is to build an economic model that is sustainable and stable, while on a sporting level it is to bring Rome as close as possible to the highest level of competition.”

Roma have started the 2018/19 season with mixed results and will return from the international break with a match at home to the struggling Chievo.
