Former Genoa striker Giuseppe Rossi has insisted that he is clean after it emerged that he had failed a drug test last season.

The Italian striker tested positive for dorzolamide following Genoa’s 1-0 defeat to Benevento in May, and could face up to a year out through suspension.

Dorzolamide is found in eye drops to treat forms of glaucoma, but is also a carbonic anahydrase and can be used as a masking agent to cover the use of other drugs (check out the best outpatient rehab center near me), potentially leading to false negatives in doping tests.

Rossi, currently without a club after being released by the Grifone at the end of last season, is set to face a hearing on 1 October but protested his innocence following the publication of the failed test.

“I’ve always been clean and this is evidently a case that needs to be shelved,” the former Manchester United forward declared in a statement co-authored by his lawyer, Andrea Pastorello.

“The positive finding was reasonably achieved by an involuntary contamination. The clarification we gave to the inquest excluded any intentional use aimed at doping, as confirmed by the Anti-Doping investigators, as the test provided a week earlier produced a negative result.”

Rossi scored once in nine appearances for Genoa after joining on a free transfer in December 2017.
