Despite a late defeat to Parma, Inter coach Luciano Spalletti was clear in that his side’s performance wasn’t as bad as many think, and they just lack a bit of killer instinct in front of goal.

A late Federico Dimarco goal gave Parma a 1-0 win, with Inter having 28 shots on goal but were unable to beat Luigi Sepe.

“It’s true that we don’t have that many points particularly in the matches we have played,” Spalletti told the press. “We have to react better and remain organised and keep our heads right.

“The team didn’t do badly apart from in the last 20 minutes when we conceded, and from there, fell apart.

“We didn’t handle the ball well when we had it, which resulted in a painful defeat. We didn’t create a lot, despite knocking on the door for most of the game. We have to get better at exploiting the chances we have.”

Inter felt they should have had a penalty when an Ivan Perisic effort struck the hand of Dimarco as it flashed across goal.

“There is no doubt it was a penalty,” Spalletti went on. “I don’t know why it wasn’t given.

“I have to improve the team and if I can’t do that then I haven’t done my job well. I have a strong team and I think the choices we made were correct.

“We played a few balls into the box, but we weren’t there in terms of the emotional side of the game, and didn’t have that mean streak in the final third.

“I have to take responsibility for that. We have plenty of options up front, so it isn’t a problem of numbers, we have quality attackers.

“It is clear that if you don’t push 100 percent with your head and your body, then you don’t score and consequently don’t win games.”

When quizzed about the mentality of the players, Spalletti was clear his side have improvements to make on the mental side of the game.

“In some moments the team wanted to raise the bar, but when things fail they get nervous,” he said.

“We have to build and I have to make clear that you don’t throw away titles this soon. We will analyse what happened and then dust ourselves off and start over.”
