After defeat to Parma, Genoa captain Domenico Criscito underlined the importance of hard work for the Grifone with Juventus, AC Milan, Inter and Napoli coming up in their next five matches.

Krzysztof Piatek scored again to break the deadlock after just five minutes, but the visitors came from behind and scored three in quick succession – with Luca Rigoni, Luca Siligardi and Fabio Ceravolo on the scoresheet.

“We had to win this game, but we didn’t,” he told reporters. “We tried to react in the second half, we had some chances, but weren’t very dangerous. I wouldn’t say it was bad luck, we had to win and we didn’t, sometimes it goes this way.

“It was the same thing at Sassuolo, we scored early and thought the game would be easy. We have to make the mistakes and turn them into a learning experience. We have very difficult games now, but we can get some good results.

“We definitely didn’t underestimate our opponents. We started well, but the immediate equaliser held us back.”

The former Zenit player also spoke about his upcoming game with the Azzurri, as Italy host Ukraine at the Stadio Luigi Ferrarsi in Genoa for a friendly on Wednesday night: “I’m very happy to be able to be playing for the national team again.”
