Nicolo Barella and Cristiano Biraghi’s recent exploits in an Italy shirt look to have set off a transfer battle between city rivals Inter and AC Milan.

The two Milan clubs will square off in the Derby della Madonnina this Sunday, with the Serie A odds having Inter as very slight favourites, but it looks like the never-ending competition between the two will extend to the transfer market.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports both clubs have made their interest in Barella and Biraghi known as they look to land the talented Azzurri duo.

The Cagliari man made his senior team debut last week against Ukraine, and he followed that up with another impressive performance in Italy’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Poland on Sunday.

As a result the Isolani are asking for €40-50 million for the midfielder, with Inter the favourites to land his signature given Barella’s agent – Alessandro Beltrami – also represents Radja Nainggolan.

That hasn’t stopped Milan from making a push, as Leonardo has made his interest known in recent weeks, though it’s believed whichever of the two club’s qualify for the Champions League will likely have the upper hand in the transfer battle.

A place in Europe’s top competition likely won’t determine where Biraghi plays.

Milan were close to landing the Fiorentina man in July, as he was the top candidate to replace Ricardo Rodriguez. That all changed when the Rossoneri were taken over by Elliot Management, as the Swiss full-back remained at the San Siro.

Gennaro Gattuso remains a big fan of the Italian, and with Ivan Strinic’s future unclear at this time, it’s believed Milan will make another push come this summer.

They will have to beat out Inter to capture his signature, as Luciano Spalletti and Piero Ausilio are keeping regular tabs on his progress.

Biraghi also grew up in the Nerazzurri youth ranks, meaning a return to the Giuseppe Meazza would prove valuable in terms of registration rules in Italy and Europe.

A move won’t come cheap though, as Inter sold Biraghi for €1.5m back in 2016. Now valued at €15-20m after his maiden goal for Italy against Poland, a move won’t come cheap for either of the Milan giants.
