Former Inter midfielder Dejan Stankovic is impressed with what he has seen from the Nerazzurri so far, though he isn’t holding out hope of a title challenge given Juventus’ form to date.

The Biscione currently sit in third, eight points back of the Bianconeri as Massimiliano Allegri’s side remain perfect after eight matches.

Stankovic knows a push for the Scudetto isn’t likely given Juventus’ dominance thus far, but the Serbian believes Inter can show their worth domestically and in the Champions League.

“Inter have put together a good run,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “I expected it would happen sooner or later because they are a well constructed team.

“They have a great coach like [Luciano] Spalletti and are improving with each match. I like that the players are showing their character when things get tough.

“Inter have to be ready for Serie A and Champions League, they can’t pick between the two. They have to march forward until the end.

“I am a realist when it comes to the league, you can see that Juventus are playing on their own and the other sides are playing for second and third place.

Stankovic singled out Matteo Politano as having impressed so far, though he expects more from Roberto Gagliardini.

“The Inter squad has ample room for improvement,” he added. “They have a lot of options and a deep bench is important.

“You waste a lot of energy playing on three fronts. A lot of players have improved, and I expected to see Politano play like he has.

“I remember seeing his runs [at Sassuolo] and he has done well. I expect more from Gagliardini, a player that could become important for Inter.”

Inter’s next match is the Derby della Madonnina against AC Milan on October 21.
