Ausilio: Why can’t Inter dream of Modric

The Luka Modric to Inter fires have been stoked a little more once again by the club’s sporting director Piero Ausilio, who believes there is no harm in dreaming of such a deal.

On the back of his successful World Cup showing in which he helped Croatia to the final, the midfielder was heavily linked with a move to the Nerazzurri in the summer.

Nothing came of the deal and Modric has remained at Real Madrid, with Ausilio reflecting on that summer interest and whether it could be revisited.

“I did not believe in it [the deal] all the way but at the same time, I don’t see why we can’t dream of such things,” he told Sky Sport Italia of the Modric interest.

“All I was saying was that ‘we are here, and if Real Madrid want to talk then we are open to that’. But we know our possibilities and the costs and didn’t think negotiations would go well.

“Maybe it could come back as an idea because we are talking about an important player of great quality and in football, you can never rule anything out.”

Another man who has been tentatively linked to an Inter return some day is Jose Mourinho, who enjoyed great success in Italy but who was recently sacked by Manchester United and Ausilio labelled that speculation as nothing more than paper talk.

“He was very good here but he isn’t casting a shadow over us and it doesn’t surprise me that we are talking about this in a time where the media is constant and everyone needs to say something,” he explained.

“We work on a more rational basis. We don’t put too much emotion into decisions. Our project has been in place with Luciano Spalletti and we will continue with him for many years.”
