After Mauro Icardi came in for negative press following his trip to Madrid on Sunday night, he has been defended by former Inter striker Antonio Cassano, who wasn’t happy about it.

The Argentine made the trip to Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night with his family to take in the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate.

However, that led to heavy criticism for the forward, given that it came 48 hours before his side’s crunch Champions League clash with PSV on Tuesday night.

“All of that is just bulls**t. He can do what he wants! He was with his wife and when I was 20, I was on the brink of retirement but then the next day I’d go out and score two goals,” he told Tiki Taka.

“The ideal thing now is that he scores against PSV because then people will immediately change their opinion.”

Cassano also had some strong words for the VAR system which he believes has been poorly implemented in Italy, while also offering a surprise update on how he hopes to return to football in the future.

“VAR is becoming a clown show. Players no longer know whether they can celebrate or not after scoring a goal! Let’s leave the referees alone to do their job,” added the ex-Sampdoria striker.

“My future? I would like to become a sporting director with full powers but I don’t want to take a salary unnecessarily.”
