Eusebio Di Francesco could not contain his rage after witnessing his Roma side throw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at nine-man Cagliari in Serie A on Saturday.

The Giallorossi raced into a 2-0 lead before half-time and looked to have wrapped up only a second Serie A win in seven matches when both Darijo Srna and Luca Ceppitelli were sent off deep into stoppage time, despite Artur Ionita pulling a goal back on 85 minutes.

However, Marco Sau raced clear and fired Cagliari level with almost the last kick of the game to complete a sensational comeback and spark a furious reaction from Di Francesco towards his own team.

“It annoys me that we could have seen off this game, but due to our own selfishness and ingenuity we didn’t,” the former Sassuolo coach told RomaTV at the Sardegna Arena after the final whistle.

“I’m enraged that a team like ours can concede 30 seconds from the end because they didn’t keep the ball and take it to where it ought to have been. The ball cannot be gifted away in such a situation and it is inexcusable.

“This was not a team full of youngsters and kids and this is what drives me crazy. The players must understand that they do not deserve to take home all three points after a performance like that. I’m really angry and was not expecting us to see out the game like that.”

Roma will look to get their stuttering season back on track when they welcome Genoa to the Stadio Olimpico next Sunday.
