Gattuso: AC Milan were poor in possession

After a poor 0-0 draw with Bologna, AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso has blamed a lack of incisiveness with the ball which cost the Rossoneri on Tuesday night.

For the majority of the match Gattuso’s men were on top, but were unable to fashion and real opportunities, with life being made more difficult after Tiemoue Bakayoko’s red card 14 minutes from time.

However, the point did move Milan two ahead of Lazio in the race for Champions League football, with Bologna still in the relegation zone, one point behind Udinese who lie 17th in the Serie A table.

“We had a lot of possession, but it was sterile possession,” Gattuso told the press. “At the end of the day, we needed a bit more quality.

“We had the ball in a school like manner, but we only tickled the opponents. We even risked a defeat.

“The most worrying thing is that we stretched out opponents in the last two games, but failed to score. We have to be calm. Our defensive crisis is coming to an end, and now we have one in attack.”

Gattuso started with Gonzalo Higuain and Patrick Cutrone up front, but replaced the latter with Sami Castillejo. Bakayoko will miss the match against Fiorentina after being sent off, while Frank Kessie will also miss the match through suspension after being booked on Tuesday.

“I put Castillejo on because he has different characteristics to Patrick,” Gattuso said. “I was looking for someone to dribble more, and we also moved to a 4-4-1-1.

“We get more into the box when we play a 4-3-3, which Bonaventura fits into well. But right now, with a 4-4-2, it is easier for the opponents to read us.

“We have lost two important players [Bakayoko and Kessie], but we aren’t going to get on at them. We will play the best possible team against Fiorentina.”
