After beating SPAL 2-1, AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso was happy with the level his side showed and reiterated the goal for the club is Champions League football.

Andrea Petagna netted against his former employers to give SPAL the lead, but Samu Castillejo and Gonzalo Higuain made sure of a 2-1 victory as 2018 came to an end for the Rossoneri.

“In the first half Abate and Suso made the difference,” Gattuso told the press, “and having not killed the game off is a regret.

“We knew how to react, and we got better [as the game went on]. Calhanoglu and Suso made the difference.

“December was very difficult for us, we have had a lot of problems and never had that fortune available to us.

“Our objective is to get into the Champions League [places] in the spring.”

Higuain broke an 895 minute drought in front of goal, and Gattuso is hoping the floodgates open for the striker.

“When you are used to scoring,” Gattuso went on. “It’s difficult to change that habit. He is always brilliant in front of goal.

“After the Juve game in which he had a bad night, everything became more difficult. He reacted badly, but now after not scoring for 60 days, he has hopefully unlocked something.”

In terms of other performances, Gianluigi Donnrumma was singled out by his coach who had some wise offerings for the 19-year-old.

“He is one of the best in the world,” Gattuso continued. “He has more to learn, and he spends to much time on his mobile phone.

“He gets to involved with those who insult him. It’s better that he trains [well] instead of thinking about his mobile.”

Rumours had circultated that if Milan hadn’t have beaten SPAL, Gattuso would be out of a job, and he had some stark words on the topic.

“There is a great respect between myself, Maldini and Leonardo,” Gattuso stated. “And we agree on many things.

“There is a respect and friendship on a professional level. You [journalists] are the ones who have created problems since the beginning of July.

“In Italy only Allegri can’t be questioned. When the results don’t arrive, the first person to pay is the coach.”

Finally, Gattuso was asked about Milan’s plans for the transfer market.

“We need a midfielder and a striker,” Gattuso said. “But as Leonardo said, we can’t do much in the transfer market. We have some things sorted already.”
