A 1-1 draw against PSV wasn’t enough for Inter, who are out of the Champions League with results elsewhere going against them.
Inter have fallen behind in every one of their group matches this season and Hirving Lozano put PSV ahead after just 13 minutes, making Inter’s task all the harder, and it took a frustrating Nerazzurri until the 73rd minute when Mauro Icardi bagged the equaliser.
It wasn’t enough for Inter who had to hope that Barcelona beat Tottenham Hotspur in Group B’s other match, and despite the Blaugrana taking an early lead, Lucas Moura grabbed a point for the Premier League side and took them through to the knockout stages at the Nerazzurri’s expense.
Inter started the match well putting PSV underpressure and hit the post through Ivan Perisic who got on the end of a Mauro Icardi cross, then Danilo D’Ambrosio had a free header but couldnt get it on target.
Cheers erupted around the Stadio Meazza when news of Ousmane Dembele’s goal for Barcelona was announced on the big screen.
Those celebrations didn’t last long as Kwadwo Asamoah was robbed of the ball on the right, and Steven Bergwijn crossed to the far post for Lozano to head into the empty net. The fourth time PSV have taken the lead in their six group matches.
Things almost went from bad to worse for Inter as another Asamoah mistake saw Luuk De Jong race in on goal, but Samir Handanovic got down low to make the save.
From there, Inter took the game to their opponents, but a flurry of crosses into the box couldn’t find their desired target. Meanwhile at the other end, Handanovic had to be alert in order to tip a Bergwijn rocket over the crossbar.
At the beginning of the second half Icardi was fed by Borja Valero, but a brilliant save from Jeroen Zoet tipped the Inter captain’s shot wide of the post.
Politano rifled across goal, then Zoet collected an easy Valero effort, before the ball fell to Icardi six yards out, but his strike was defected out.
The pressure finally paid of as Politano launched a long ball into the box and Icardi nodded home at the far post to send the Nerazzurri fans wild.
It was too little too late for Inter as in Barcelona a Moura equaliser at the Camp Nou for Tottenham, silenced the Meazza and sent the Nerazzurri crashing into the Europa League.
