Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi believes that while his side may have fallen to Atalanta, they showed enough spirit to earn something from the contest.

Duvan Zapata scored the lone marker after just 58 seconds, and the Biancocelesti failed to really do much of anything in attack after that.

Francesco Acerbi netted in injury time, but Inzaghi stated he knew it would be called back given it wasn’t immediately confirmed.

“When I saw that they were waiting to confirm the goal, I thought that they would call it back,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“There’s a lot of regret given it’s a match we didn’t deserve to lose. Objectively, this is the only match we’ve lost this season that we shouldn’t have.

“With this spirit we can achieve our goals. I celebrated heavily because I didn’t see why they would call it back.

“It prevented us from earning a draw, which would have done very little for the standings.”

Despite the defeat, Inzaghi made it clear he was happy with how his side performed.

“I’m upset with the result, but not with our performance,” he added.

“Atalanta played with a three-man defence but they didn’t have a shot on goal. Their goal came from a poor clearance by Radu.

“Our position in the standings has worsened, but we are still in fifth. Lazio will battle back and fight for a place in Europe’s top competition.”
