The vacant managerial position at English League Two side Cambridge United has reportedly been applied for by ex-Italy international Mauro Camoranesi.

The former Juventus winger was part of the Azzurri squad which triumphed against all the odds to win the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

Having moved on to the coaching phase of his career following his retirement in 2014, CambridgeshireLive have reported that he has shown an interest in the job at The Abbey and has applied for the post.

Camoranesi’s previous coaching experience includes two short separate spells in Mexico, which came either side of a stint in the country of his birth, Argentina, with Club Atletico Tigre.

The 42-year-old is now keen to return to European shores, which is why he believes a move to Cambridge would be a suitable one for all parties concerned.

During his playing career, Camoranesi spent a decade in Italian football, enjoying two years in Verona in addition to his eight-season spell with the Old Lady.
