Luciano Spalletti praised captain Mauro Icardi and was adamant Inter deserved to beat Udinese, as the Nerazzurri managed to get past the visitors wth a 1-0 victory.

The Nerazzurri got the win at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, courtesy of an Icardi penalty, and the coach underlined how the striker not only scored, but performed in a complete way, helping out the team throughout.

“Mauro Icardi played like the perfect striker,” the Inter coach told reporters after the game. “Sometimes you need to help the midfielders, coming into the pitch, and he did it.

“In the last two games he showed to have this all round performance. We should have put the game on the right tracks earlier.

“At times we weren’t as good as we should have been in possession.

“Not taking the chances could mean that some people can look at this game and think Inter shouldn’t have won, but we deserved to win it.

“We did nothing extraordinary, but did the necessary things.

Radja Nainggolan was sidelined with an injury, and the Nerazzurri lacked his ability to go for goal, and Spalletti underlined this.

“Borja Valero and Joao Mario had a couple of chances,” Spalletti added, “but it’s clear we lack that killer instinct in the midfield without Nainggolan. These midfielders can also score goals, but they’re different overall to the Belgian.”
