After a comfortable 3-0 win over Chievo, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri was happy his side were able to hit the ground running again but rued the missed chances.

A cold Monday evening in Torino meant only 30,000 spectators were in attendance to witness Juventus extend their unbeaten home record over the Flying Donkeys to 16 Serie A matches.

Juventus paraded the Supercoppa Italiana trophy before the match, and Douglas Costa opened the scoring with a rasping effort 13 minutes in, before Emre Can got number two just before half time. Stefano Sorrentino saved a Cristiano Ronaldo spot kick, but Daniele Rugani headed in the third late on.

“The important thing was to start Serie A after games at Bologna and the Supercoppa,” Allegri told the press.

“Tonight the players showed respect to their opponents, and we only risked conceding from a header 70 minutes in. It was a good match.

“Bernardeschi and Rugani both had great games, and we also have Douglas Costa back.

“With two central midfielders, we were unable to finish off the moves. But we were always able to restart the action again.”

Ronaldo was denied by Sorrentino from the spot, and also missed a plethora of chances over the 90 minutes.

“He was looking for a goal,” Allegri said. “And in the first half he was too eager, then in the second he had two chances where he did better.

“I don’t think his penalty miss was the first mistake he has made in his career.

“The important thing is that the team won.”
