Gonzalo Higuain has been heavily linked with a Stadio San Siro exit either in January or at the end of the season, but AC Milan sporting director Leonardo has called for the forward to remain focused on his job at the club.

With Chelsea apparently interested in the striker, who has not had his best spell at Milan, many expect the Argentine to depart sooner rather than later.

“Gonzalo has lived through this moment but now he has to leave it behind him,” Leonardo said, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He must take his responsibilities and push.

“He has to stay focused, forget about what is being said in the market and, as long as he is here he has to do this.”

Milan are due to meet with the UEFA commission this coming Friday to discuss their situation regarding Financial Fair Play, but Leonardo doesn’t think it will tell them too much.

“I don’t think the meeting on Friday will give us a definitive indication,” he said.

“But in the meantime time passes and we are losing opportunities.

“We try to sign on loan with the option to buy, but it’s not certain that clubs will accept.”

What is clear this January is that Milan need to offload some of their peripheral players in order to cut their wage bill but also to trim the squad.

?“We haven’t received any official offers for [Fabio] Borini, just like with [Alen] Halilovic.

“We will have to see [when asked about Riccardo Montolivo].

“There are 30 players, so someone will have to leave.”
