Despite playing the majority of the second half with 10 men, Torino escaped from Ferrara with a point against SPAL but Walter Mazzarri was far from happy.

Nicolas Nkoulou saw red for a second booking in what was a relatively physical game, but the Toro coach was mystified by inconsistencies in referee Maurizio Mariani’s decision-making.

“The referee didn’t allow us to play with 11 against 11,” a furiously animated Mazzarri told journalists at his post-match press conference.

“Nkoulou’s red card was a foul for us, but the whistle was blown against him and now we’re without an important player for our next game.

“I’m very angry. There was also a foul on [Andrea] Belotti in the other area.”

Mazzarri’s fury was aimed solely at the officiating though and he didn’t seem overly disappointed to leave with a draw.

“SPAL put opposing teams in trouble here,” he said, despite the Biancazzurri failing to win in any of their last nine games at the Stadio Paolo Mazza.

“They have really important fans who can also influence the officials.

“Only Barcelona and Real Madrid win a lot of games in a row so we will continue as we have before.”
