FIGC President Gabriele Gravina has opened the door for Serie A to introduce a playoff and playout format.

Italy’s top league currently features 20 clubs, with the top side awarded the Scudetto and the bottom three automatically relegated to Serie B.

It stands in stark contrast to Italy’s second highest division where the top two sides are automatically promoted, and three through eight face off in a playoff for the final promotion spot.

As for relegation, the bottom three teams are sent to Serie C with 15th and 16th facing off in a two-leg playout to determine the final relegated side.

“I say it in a provocatory way, as there haven’t been any discussions,” he told Corriere dello Sport. “It’s just an idea.

“We could look into a championship that has a playoff and playout format which begins after the first part of the championship.”

The Belgian First Division currently features teams playing 30 matches each in the regular season, before entering a playoff format according to their position in the regular season.
