Italy coach Roberto Mancini has revealed he wanted to bring Daniele De Rossi to Manchester City when he was in charge of the Premier League giants.

The revelation comes after word emerged Tuesday that De Rossi will leave the Lupi after 18 years with the first team.

While the 35-year-old has stated he will continue his playing career elsewhere, Mancini has revealed he tried to sign him during his time in England from 2009 to 2013.

“De Rossi’s departure is very sad as he gave his entire career to Roma,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “It’s a sad day.

“I wanted him at Manchester City because I thought he was one of the best in the world.

“We wanted to improve the side but it wasn’t possible to sign him.”

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina has opened the door for a playoff/playout format to be introduced in Serie A, and Mancini has thrown his support behind any idea that improves the league.

“When there are ideas you can talk about anything,” he stated.

“Juventus have down well and now the other sides have to do more in order to find a way past them.”
