Italy were defeated 1-0 by Ukraine in the FIFA U20 World Cup on Tuesday as their campaign ended at the semi-final stage.
Ukraine took the lead in the 65th minute thanks to a goal from Dynamo Kyiv youth striker Serhiy Buletsa and managed to hold on in spite of being reduced to 10 men when Denys Popov was sent off in the 79th minute.
Italy dominated possession for large spells but were unable to find a way through as Ukraine eventually broke the deadlock.
The Azzurrini will now face a third placed play off against either Ecuador or South Korea on Friday night, with the final being played on Saturday.
Italy defeated Mexico and fellow semi-finalists Ecuador in the group stage, whilst drawing with Japan, before they went on to beat hosts Poland and Mali en route to the semis.
