Exciting Irish prospect Cathal Heffernan is set to train with a handful of Serie A’s biggest clubs.

The 15-year-old is the son of Olympians Rob and Maria Heffernan and is currently on the books of Cork City, playing for their under-17 side.

The young centre-back started training with Atalanta earlier this week and will try his luck at Juventus, AC Milan, Roma, as he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Kevin Zefi, who recently moved from Irish champions Shamrock Rovers to Inter.

Heffernan has captained Ireland at Under-15 level and his first step in Italy is with Atalanta before heading on to Roma and then finishing off in Milan and Turin.

The young defender will hope to get out of the blocks quickly as the race to find top clubs in Europe hots up for Irish youth players, a programme headed by former Republic of Ireland international Stephen Ireland.
