The dates have been released for the renovation of Atalanta’s Curva Sud and the construction of a new car park.
Within the recently released budget, it’s clear that work will begin at the start of June this year, and is scheduled to finish in February 2022. This is of course subject to calendar and budget changes.
When Atalanta first qualified for the Europa League in 2017, the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia didn’t meet the minimum requirements for UEFA, so they played at Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium.
When they qualified for the Champions League in 2019/20, they were allowed to host matches at their own stadium. Due to the work still being carried out on the stadium though, their capacity had been reduced to 16,000.
They decided to maximise their time in the Champions League by playing at the Stadio San Siro, where they could take 40,000 fans. They did, though, return to Bergamo for the Champions League in 2020/21, though games were played behind closed doors from the beginning of the European campaign.
The club will hope their current success continues so that Champions League knockout games can be played in front of a packed-out Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in the future.
